What Are Porcelain Veneers? A Complete Overview
Porcelain veneers are one of the most versatile cosmetic dentistry tools available. Here’s everything you need to know about the process, the results, and whether they’re right for you.
Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored material designed to cover the front surface of your teeth and improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth, changing their color, shape, size, or length.
Why Porcelain?
Veneers can be made from porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain is the preferred choice for most patients because it resists stains better and mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth — giving you a result that looks genuinely real.
What Can Veneers Fix?
Veneers are typically used to address:
- Gaps between teeth
- Discolored or stained teeth that don’t respond to whitening
- Worn-down teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Slightly misaligned or uneven teeth
The Process
Getting porcelain veneers typically requires three appointments. The first is a consultation where we discuss your goals and examine your teeth. At the second appointment, we prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of enamel (about half a millimeter) and take an impression. That impression goes to our dental lab, where your custom veneers are crafted. At the third appointment, we permanently bond the veneers to your teeth, check the fit and color, and make any final adjustments.
The result? A transformed smile that looks completely natural. If you’re curious whether veneers are right for you, we’d love to talk through your options at a complimentary consultation.
