Are Dental X-Rays Safe? Your Questions Answered

Patients often ask about radiation from dental X-rays. Here’s the science-backed answer — and why modern digital X-rays are safer than ever.

One of the most common questions we hear from patients is about dental X-rays and radiation exposure. It’s a fair question — and the answer is reassuring.

The Radiation Is Extremely Small

The dose of radiation from a full set of dental X-rays is comparable to what you’d receive during a cross-country airplane flight. Advances in digital X-ray technology have reduced radiation levels dramatically compared to older film-based systems.

Modern Safeguards

Today’s digital X-ray machines limit the radiation beam to a very small, targeted area. Higher-speed sensors require far shorter exposure times than older equipment. We also use lead-lined body aprons to protect you during every X-ray. Federal law requires that dental X-ray equipment be inspected for accuracy and safety on a regular basis.

Why X-Rays Matter

Dental X-rays allow us to see what’s happening beneath the surface — detecting cavities between teeth, monitoring bone levels, identifying infections, and catching problems early before they become serious (and expensive). Skipping X-rays to avoid minimal radiation exposure can mean missing issues that are much easier to treat when caught early.

If you have specific concerns about X-rays, we’re always happy to discuss them. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed and comfortable with every aspect of your care.
