5 Warning Signs of Gum Disease You Shouldn’t Ignore
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and most people don’t know they have it until it’s advanced. Here are the signs to watch for.
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is one of the most common dental conditions in adults — and one of the most underdiagnosed. Because it’s often painless in its early stages, many patients don’t realize they have it until significant damage has already occurred.
Here are five warning signs that should prompt a call to our office:
1. Bleeding Gums
Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are not normal. This is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease. The good news: caught early, gingivitis is completely reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care.
2. Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums
Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. If yours look red, puffy, or feel tender to the touch, that’s inflammation — a sign that bacteria are irritating the gum tissue.
3. Receding Gums
If your teeth look longer than they used to, your gums may be pulling away from the teeth. Gum recession exposes the roots, increases sensitivity, and creates pockets where bacteria can accumulate.
4. Persistent Bad Breath
Bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing and mouthwash can be a sign of bacterial buildup beneath the gumline — a hallmark of gum disease.
5. Loose or Shifting Teeth
In advanced gum disease, the bone and tissue supporting your teeth begin to break down. If your teeth feel loose or you notice changes in your bite, this requires immediate attention.
The most important thing to know: gum disease is treatable, especially when caught early. Regular cleanings and checkups are your best defense. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, call us — we’re here to help.
